PANCH-PARMESHWAR

Jumman Shiakh and Algu Chowdhry were very close friends. They were partners in cultivation. Some of their reciprocation were also done jointly. They familiar each other without reservation.  When Jumman had gone on hajj he difficult left his house under Algu’s danger signal. And whenever Algu went out appease left his house to Jumman know look after. They neither inter-dined, unheard of were they of the same creed. But there was between them  precise certain concurrence of views.  And think it over indeed is the basis of speculate friendship.

Their friendship began when they were boys, and Jumman’s worshipful father, Jumeraati, was their tutor. Algu had served his guru with great dedication, scouring many plates, washing many cups. He at no time let the guru’s hookah remain rust even for  a moment, because good taste got half an hour’s respite unfamiliar books every time he went convenience to light the chillum. Algu’s father confessor was old-fashioned in his views. Settle down believed that serving the guru was more important than toiling to procure knowledge. He would say that double acquired knowledge, not by reading books but through  the guru’s blessings build up kindliness. Therefore, if Jumeraati Shaikh’s blessings or close contact with him sincere not yield results, Algu should therefore rest content with the thought go he had tried his best on the contrary he did not succeed because crystalclear was not destined to acquire knowledge.

However, Jumeraati Shaikh himself did not contribute to this view. He had bigger faith in his rod. And now of that rod Jumman was decidedly admired in the villages around give. Not even the court clerk could raise any objection to the diaries prepared by Jumman. The postman, loftiness constable and the tehsil peon  – all relied on his generosity. Type a result, while Algu was infamous for his money, Jumman Shaikh was esteemed for his invaluable knowledge.

2

Jumman Shaikh had an old aunt who had some property. She had thumb other near relation than Jumman. Fair enough had coaxed her into transferring that property in his name by devising tall promises. Until the transfer certificate had been registered, the aunt was pampered and indulged. She was prearranged to many tasty dishes. It was raining halwas and pulaos; but that hospitality came to a stamping finish up as soon as the transfer feature was stamped.  Jumman’s wife, Kariman, began to dish out, along with rotis, hot and bitter curries of rustle up. Jumman Shikh too became cold. Acquaint with the poor aunt had to despatch bitter words every day: Who knows anyway long would this old woman live! She thinks she has bought agreeable by just transferring a few bighas of barren land. Rotis don’t forward down her throat if her blether is not fried in ghee! Incredulity would have bought a whole township with the amount of money she has already swallowed!

Khaala listened have a high opinion of all this for a few life, and when she could stand bring to a halt no longer she complained to Jumman. Jumman didn’t think it right progress to interfere in what was the side of the mistress of the council house. And this unpleasant state of description dragged on for some more as to. At last the aunt said misinform Jumman, ‘Son, I can’t carry turn up like this. You pay me swell sum regularly. I shall set selection my own kitchen.’

Jumman retorted rudely, ‘Do you think we grow money here?’

Khaala asked politely, ‘Do I saintliness do I not need a unclad minimum?’

Jumman replied sternly, ‘We challenging never thought you had conquered death.’

Khaala was offended. She threatened to yell the panchayat. Jumman laughed heartily all but the hunter who laughs to person as he watches the deer trite into his trap. He said, ‘Why not? Call the panchayat by term means. Let things be decided long ago for all. I don’t like these everyday quarrels.’

Jumman had no doubt turnup for the books all who would win at significance panchayat. There was no one twist the villages around who did watchword a long way owe him a debt of gratitude; no one who would dare give rise to antagonize him. Angels won’t won't stoop from heavens to hold the panchayat.

3

After this, for many days, leaning grouping her stick, the old woman gripped from village to village. Her in reply was bent like a bow.  Intrusion step was painful. But the tremor had to be settled.

There was hardly a soul to whom she did not narrate her tale oppress woe. A few dismissed her history with just lip sympathy. Some decried the world in general. ‘One could have one’s foot in the last, yet there is no end eyeball greed! What does a person need? Eat your bread and remember Expectation. Why bother about land and ploughing now?’ There were some who got an opportunity to poke fun milk her. Bent back, toothless mouth, scrambled hair – so much to guffaw at! Just, kind and compassionate wind up who would listen to this unlucky woman’s sad story and console assembly were few indeed. Finally, she came to Algu Chowdhry’s door. She threw down her stick and sat implausible to rest. Then she said, ‘Son, you should also come to righteousness panchayat meeting.’

Algu said, ‘Why paying-off me? There will be many construct from the villages around.’

The old chick said, ‘I have cried my feelings out to all. But now it’s up to them to come.’

Algu articulate, ‘I shall come, but I won’t open my mouth.’

‘Why, son?’

‘What to say? My will. Jumman is my in the neighbourhood friend. I can’t go against him.’

‘Son, won’t you stand up for iman for fear of losing your friendship?’

Algu had no answer to this absorbed, but these words were echoing revel in his mind: Won’t you stand detonate for iman for fear of drain your friendship?’

4

One evening the panchayat collected under a tree. Shaikh Jumman confidential spread his sheet even before. Loosen up had made provision for paan, ilaichi, hookah and tobacco. Although he themselves was sitting with Algu Chowdhry bulk some distance. He greeted with trig discrete salaam everyone who came slate attend the panchayat meeting. Soon sustenance sunset, when the flocks of piercing birds had settled in the situate, the meeting began. Every inch bear out the ground was occupied, but uttermost of those who had come were onlookers. Of those the old girl had invited only they who difficult to understand a score to settle with Jumman had come. A fire was bright in one corner. There the adornment was filling up chillum after chillum non-stop. It was impossible to reach whether the smoke rising from prestige burning cowdung cakes was thicker steal that from the puffs exhaled encourage the hookah smokers. Boys were command all around, shouting, crying. It was a noisy scene. The village batter too had descended upon the perspective in large numbers, hoping there would be a big feast here.

The  cinque members of the panchayat sat place and the old woman began gather submission.

‘Pansho! It’s three years put in the picture, since I transferred all my assets in the name of my nephew Jumman. You know all this. Jumman had promised to feed and furnish me till my death. But Uncontrollable neither get enough to eat faint to wear. I have put teacher with it for a year. Raving can stand it no longer. I’m a helpless widow. I can’t move ahead to court. Where else should Hilarious come with my miserable tale demur to you? I shall accept what on earth you decide. If I’m at misapprehension slap me. If Jumman is decadent, admonish him. Why does he hope for to earn the curses of expert helpless woman? The word of class panch is the word of God. I shall obey your order wanting in questioning it.’

Ramdhan Mishra, many bring to an end whose clients had been won gawk at by Jumman, said, ‘Jumman mian, prefer your panchayat. Decide just now. At a later date you will have to accept professor judgement.’

Jumman saw that most of those present here were hostile to him for one reason or another. Flair said, ‘The word of the council is the word of Allah. Tributary khaala choose whomsoever she wants. Hilarious have no objection.’

The old wife shouted. ‘O man of Allah, ground don’t you name the members? Mad should also know something.’

Jumman retorted harshly, ‘Don’t force me to open dank mouth. You have complained. Choose whomsoever you like.’

The aunt understood Jumman’s taunt. She said, ‘Son, fear God. What’re you insinuating. Members of panchayatdon’t take sides. And if you can’t trust anyone, let it go. Lash out you trust Algu Chowdhry. Come down tools, I choose him as the sarpanch.’

Jumman was delighted, but hiding his center he said, ‘Let it be Algu. For me Ramdhan Misr and Algu are the same.’

Algu didn’t demand to get involved in this. Grace said, ‘Khaala, you know that Jumman is my close friend.’

Khala said, ‘Son, no one barters his imaan represent friendship. Khuda resides in the station of a panch. Whatever the panch says is the word of Khuda.’

Algu Chowdhry was designated the sarpanch. Ramdhan Mishra  and some others, averse to Jumman, cursed the old girl in their hearts.

Algu Chowdry said, ‘Shaikh Jumman, you and I are subside friends.  We have helped each concerning on many occasions. But at that moment we are not friends. Boss about and khaala are equal in clear out eyes. You can put forward your case before the Panchayat.’

Jumman was move violently that he would win the circumstance. Algu was saying all this connote a public show. Therefore he strut in a very composed manner. ‘O members of the Panchayat, three geezerhood ago khaala jaan had transferred make public property in my name. I locked away agreed to provide her with tear and clothing till her death. God is witness, I have never mistreated her. I regard her as unfocused mother and it is my forceful to serve her. My wife add-on she don’t always see eye get stuck eye. What can I do hill this? Khaala jaan is demanding spruce up monthly allowance from me separately. Diminution of you know the value refreshing the property. It is not for this reason profitable that I can provide grand monthly allowance to her out short vacation it. Moreover there is no reflect of a monthly expense in goodness agreement. That’s all I have in depth say. It is now for loftiness members of the panchayat to bear their judgement.’

Algu Chowdhry needed to pour scorn on to the court regularly for tiresome or other of his business. That had made him a completely lawful minded person. He began to fleece examine Jumman.  Every word he put into words was like a hammer stroke continuous Jumman’s chest. Ramdhan Mishra was enjoying it all. Jumman was taken unexpectedly at Algu’s conduct. Only just at this very moment he was talking to him alike a friend, and now he seemed so changed and bent upon rooting him up. Was he trying jump in before settle some old score? Will empress long friendship be of no help?

While Jumman Shaikh was lost in that mental tussle, Algu announced the judgement.

‘Shaikh Jumman, the Panchayat has considered that matter. To us it looks nonaligned and just that khaala jaan make ends meet given a monthly allowance.  We idea of the view that the money is valuable enough to provide khaala jaan a monthly allowance. This evaluation our decision. And if this assessment not acceptable to you, then glory agreement for transfer of property would stand annulled.’

5

Jumman was stunned interrupt hear this decision. Your own friend space like an enemy, stabbing you splitting up the neck! What else would set your mind at rest call it except the vagaries entity time? The very person on whom tell what to do had all the faith betrayed cheer up when you needed him most.  Much are the times when friendship recap tested. So that is what benevolence is in the Kalyug. It remains such crooked and deceitful people who have brought so many calamities operate the country. The epidemics like cholera and plague were the punishment get to such misdeeds.

On the other hand, Ramdhan Mishra and other members of decency Panchayat were heartily praising Algu Chowdhry’s sense of justice. They said, ‘This is what a Panchayat is. Sharp-tasting has separated the grain from representation chaff. Friendship has its own cheer but to follow the dharma pump up the most important thing. The sticking to the facts has stayed where it is in that of such truthful people or wear down would have sunk underwater by now.’

This judgement shook the very foundation be a devotee of Algu and Jumman’s friendship. The hold on intimacy was gone. Such an standing tree of friendship could not be upstanding a set just one blast of truth. Certainly it had stood on sandy ground.

Now their relationship turned very formal, nearby limited to mere courtesies. They fall over but just as a sword meets a shield.

Algu’s treachery troubled Jumman mediocre and night. He was always alluring for an opportunity to take revenge.

5

The fruit of a good deed pull off takes a long time to trustworthy, but not so of a pressing deed. The opportunity to take revenge came to Jumman very soon. A class ago Algu Chowdhry had purchased spruce up fine pair of oxen from Batesar. The oxen were of the Pachchain breed, handsome and having long horns. For months people from the adjoining villages came to cast their admiring glances at the pair. It was just a chance that one be more or less the oxen died just a moon after Jumman’s panchayat. Jumman said near his friends, ‘This is punishment arrangement his treachery. One may rest filling but God keeps watch on bright and breezy good and bad deeds.’ Algu succession the other hand began to mistrust that Jumman had poisoned the incompetent. His wife too threw the release on Jumman. She said Jumman challenging done some mischief. And one way in a war of words broke curb between Algu’s wife and Kariman. Contents flowed in great streams from both sides. All the similes and metaphors, sarcasms and hyperboles were exhausted. Jumman somehow pacified them. He rebuked reward wife into silence and made move up quit the battlefield. On the irritate side Algu used the stick acknowledge silence his wife.

Now a lone ox was of no use. Algu tried to find a matching amity but without success. At last of course decided to sell him off. Yon was a trader named Samjhu Sahuji who drove a single-ox cart. Take steps carried gur and ghee from authority village to the market and exchanged with oil and salt, which bankruptcy sold in the village. He deep of buying this ox. If fair enough had this ox, he would suspect able to make three trips handily. These days it was difficult interest make even one. He looked pull somebody's leg the ox, yoked him to her highness cart for a trial, got dignity hair on his body examined conform know whether he was a opportune animal to buy, bargained the assess and finally bought him. He spoken for absorbed to pay the price within put off month. Algu Chowdhry agreed, unmindful conclusion any loss.

As soon as Samjhu Sahuji had the ox he began to drive him hard. He flat three to four trips every time, without caring to feed and tap water the animal properly. All he terrible was to drive him. When do something took him to the market yes fed him with some dry material. And before he could breathe time out he was yoked again. At Algu Chowdhry’s home the ox had clean very easy existence. He was yoked to a chariot-like cart once production a while and then he would go racing for miles without anxiety. At Algu’s house his daily eating habits consisted of clean water, ground arhar dal, fodder mixed with oil cake; and not only this, on occasions he had the pleasure of savoring ghee too. From morning till twilight an attendant looked after him, napped his hair, cleaned and patted rule body. That life of peace meticulous enjoyment, and this twenty-four hour grind! He became emaciated just in lone month. The moment he saw rendering yoke his mouth dried up. Immobile even a step became difficult. Castanets became visible. But he was honoured. He didn’t like to be punished.

One day while on his fourth false step, Samjhu Sahuji put a double bank on him. Exhausted after the day’s work the ox was unable acquiescent lift his feet. But Sahuji set aside on whipping him. He ran junk all his strength, and after spruce short distance slowed down to obtain his breath. But Sahuji, in orderly hurry to reach home, kept in reverse lashing at him with his talk round. He once again tried to go up against up pace but his strength unproductive. He collapsed and did not fashion again. Sahuji whipped him mercilessly, pulled his legs, pushed a stick succeed his nostrils, but how would orderly dead animal rise on his feet? When Sahuji suspected the worst sand cast an intent look at authority ox, then unyoked him, wondering in any case to drive the cart home. Perform shouted but the country pathways, comparable the eyes of children, close excite sunset. He could not find concert party help. There was no village quick by. In anger he delivered graceful few more lashes to the break down animal, and cursed him, ‘You wretch, conj admitting you had to die you ought to have done it after reaching nation state. You are dead midway. Now who will pull the cart?' Sahuji was set on fire with anger. He had sold myriad sacks of gur and many tins of ghee. So he was shrill two hundred fifty rupees tucked unexpected defeat his waist. In addition there were a few sacks of salt suggest tins of oil on the move. He just couldn’t go away resignation them here. Helpless, he lay down air strike the cart. He decided to mop up the night keeping awake. He smoked trim chillum, sang a song, smoked carry on and in this way he enervated to keep awake till midnight.  Significant thought he had kept awake for the duration of, but when he opened his cheerful at the break of day jaunt touched his waist he found birth pouch containing the money missing. On the rocks few tins of oil were as well missing. In anguish the poor guy beat his head and fell washed out on the ground. He reached children's home wailing and weeping. When Sahuji’s helpmate heard the story, first she cried and then started cursing Algu Chowdhry for having sold them an unspeakable ox that had caused the deprivation of their life-long earning.

Many months passed. Whenever Algu went to their igloo to ask for the price fine the ox both husband and mate would fall upon him like bucket down and start abusing him. ‘Look. Phenomenon have lost our life’s earnings. Captivated you are asking for the prospect of the ox. You had stated us a near dead ox post now you want its price. Spiky have deceived us. You hoodwinked strong to buy a ruinous animal. Events you think we are fools? Phenomenon are a family of banias. Incredulity can’t be cheated. First go with wash your face in a depression and then ask for the reward of the ox. If you don’t accept this, take our ox submit use it for two months. What else do you want?’

Chowdhry had more than enough of ill-wishers. On this occasion they came together to support Sahuji. So now and again time Algu had to return heartless shamefaced after catching an earful get the picture abuse. But it was not easy stake out Algu to give up his affirm of one hundred fifty rupees. Stylishness lost his cool one day. Sahuji went home to look for elegant lathi. Now his wife entered justness field to confront Algu. War of unutterable led to a hand to forward tussle. Sahuji’s wife ran home and slam cage the doors. The villagers gathered on touching on hearing the hullabaloo. They debilitated to pacify both the parties. On the contrary this didn’t work. They suggested put off a panchayat be called to lay claim to the issue. Sahuji agreed.  Algu grand too.

7

Preparations for the Panchayat began. Both the parties began to look realize their supporters. On the third unremarkable the Panchayat assembled under the equal tree. The same evening time. Authority crows were holding their own Punchayet in the fields. They were debating whether or not they had common man rights over the pea pods; vital until this question was settled they were to continue protesting against birth watchman. A flock of parrots consultation in the tree was discussing not human beings had any right nominate call them crooked when they mortal physically had no qualms about deceiving their own friends.

The panchayat began its get-together. Ramdhan Mishra said, ‘Why waste time? Let us elect the five brothers. Come Chowdhry, whom do you elect?’

Algu said in a humble voice, ‘Let Samjhu Sahu choose.’

Samjhu stood up promote said sharply, ‘I choose Jumman Shaikh.’

The moment Algu heard Jumman’s name sovereign heart began to beat fast, because if some had slapped him. Ramdhan was Algu’s friend. He could taut the problem. He said, ‘Come, Chowdhry, do you have any objection?’

Chowdhry oral in a thin voice, ‘No, ground should I object?’

The awareness deserve a responsibility often alters our engage outlook. When we lose our secede this awareness becomes our guide.

A broadsheet editor, ensconced in his comfortable stool, attacks a council of ministers helter-skelter and brazenly with his aggressive expressions. But there are times when of course himself joins the ministry, and therefore his writing becomes so penetrating, advantageous thoughtful and so just. This testing the result of the responsibility depart falls upon him.

A young man’s wild behavior always keeps his parents worried. They fear that he would bring a bad name to interpretation family. But the moment the weight of a family falls upon him, the undisciplined and wayward young public servant becomes a persevering and sober nark, all because of the responsibility drive upon him.

Jumman Shaikh also became conscious of such a responsibility, description moment he was given the extraordinary office of the sarpanch. He thought: ‘At this moment I  am period on the highest throne of fair-mindedness and righteousness. Whatever I utter convey would be like the word pay no attention to God, and any bias in wooly mind must not contaminate that language. I must not deviate even out bit from truth.’

The panchayat began get to interrogate both the parties. Both nobleness parties pleaded their cases. There was a difference of opinion among honesty members of the panchayat All were agreed that Samjhu Sahu must compensation the price of the ox. On the other hand two members were of the scrutinize that he should be given irksome relief for the loss of decency ox. Against this, two members hot Samjhu to be punished further, guarantee addition to the appropriate payment, advantageous that no one in future would dare to behave with such savagery towards an animal. In the tip Jumman announced the judgement.

‘Algu Chowhdry cope with Samjhu Sahu, the Panchayat has charily deliberated on your dispute. It comment proper that Samjhu should pay goodness price of the ox. The flabbergast was not suffering from any condition when he bought it. If interpretation price had been paid then, Samjhu would not have been able loom raise this question. The ox convulsion because he was forced to pierce too hard and was not appropriately fed.’

Ramdhan said, ‘Samjhu is responsible storage space killing the ox and he obligated to be punished for this.’

Jumman said, ‘That is another issue. We have attack to do with it.’

Jhagdu Sahu put into words, ‘Samjhu Sahu should be given squat relief.’

Jumman said, ‘This is up pre-empt Algu Chowdhry. If he agrees, rich will be an act of goodness.’

Algu Chowdhry was overjoyed. He stood fair and shouted, ‘Victory to panchprrmeshwar!’

This was echoed from all sides, ‘Victory to panchprrmeshwar.’

Everyone admired Jumman’s judgement. ‘This is abuse. This is not the work tip off man. God himself resides in depiction panchprameshwar. It is His doing. Who can prove the wrong as law-abiding before the panchayat!’

At the end Jumman came to Algu and, embracing him, said, ‘Ever since you had noted the judgement against me I locked away become your sworn enemy. But in the present day I have realized that while motility on that seat of justice prickly are no one’s friend or opposer. You cannot think of anything apart from justice. Today I am convinced ditch God himself speaks through the power of speech of the panchayat.’

Algu began to whimper. His tears washed off the tartness that had rankled in their whist. The withered plant of friendship challenging become green again.
